Differentiating Instruction

Gaming in the Classroom

 Lesson Demo:

For my lesson demonstration, I reviewed today’s agenda with my students.  I think it is important for students to have foresight on what is to be expected for each lesson, and activities for today. I also reiterated the Virginia SOL standard that this lesson would align with to ensure my instruction aligns with the state mandated content.  Routine is vital to success in the classroom.  Of course, we should be willing to be adaptable, however, I think it really minimizes disruptions and helps with behavior management when the students are able to anticipate changes within the day. I also feel like providing traditional review creates a healthy balance when incorporating technology in the classroom.   I then moved towards using “Gaming in the Classroom.”  “Gamification in classrooms help motivate students and can increase their ability to learn new skills by 40% and students in the digital era have an upper hand when learning through technology or game mechanics (Benhadji et al., 2019.)”

I decided to use the academic gaming platform, Blooket in order to incorporate gaming in my classroom. In my lesson demonstration you will also notice my nod to Google Classroom, Google Slides, and Brainpop jr- all are great technological components for a classroom.  Blooket is an excellent interactive tool to use in the classroom.  There are various modes, gaming options, and it aligns with study credentials. I appreciate that Blooket has the option to allow me to create review games for my students or the option to search for applicable study games. I feel that this program helps break up the monotony of traditional formative assessments because of its game-like setup.

Regarding assistive technology,  I do feel that blooket is a great tool for hearing-impaired students regarding reading on the student screen-where Kahoot requires the screen to be projected. I also feel that this aligns with a hands-on skill for kinesthetic learners.  I also like that you can set the timing for students, you can increase the time-limit, where Kahoot did not previously have this feature.  I think this helps students with delayed processing.  However, my biggest concern is that I wish Blooket provided an Immersive Reader options for students that have Specific Learning Disabilities in reading.  All in all, I think technology is here to stay in the classroom and I am glad developers are improving their platforms for the classroom.

Web-Based Assessment:
